Impacted Wisdom Teeth

What are wisdom teeth?

Third molars are commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. They are usually the last teeth to develop and are located in the back of your mouth, behind your second molars. Their development is usually completed between the middle teenage years and early twenties, a time traditionally associated with the onset of maturity and the attainment of wisdom.

What is an impacted tooth?

Although most people develop and grow 32 permanent adult teeth, many times their jaws are too small to accommodate the four wisdom teeth. When inadequate space prevents the teeth from erupting they are called impacted. This indicates their inability to erupt into the proper position for chewing and cleaning.

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of wisdom teeth, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to wisdom teeth are discussed.

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

Types of Tooth Impactions

We will need to see you for a consultation to determine if you will benefit from wisdom tooth removal. A special x-ray of your mouth and jaws (panorex) will be taken to determine if your wisdom teeth are impacted, if there is room for them to erupt, and how difficult it will be to have them removed.

  • Soft Tissue Impaction: There is not enough room to allow the gum tissue to retract for adequate cleaning of the tooth.
  • Partial Bony Impaction: There is enough space to allow the wisdom tooth to partially erupt. However, the tooth cannot function properly in the chewing process, and creates cleaning problems, among others.
  • Complete Bony Impaction: There is NO space for the tooth to erupt. It remains embedded in the jaw bone or if even partially visible requires complex surgical techniques for removal. The impacted wisdom tooth may also be in an unusual position and difficult to remove. This situation can also arise when the shape or size of the jaw bone and other facial structures make removal of this tooth significantly more complex.

Patient Testimonial

5 Year’s ago I was referred to one office in a close neighboring town, the next year to another office which seemed very scary even for a minor surgery and then to Dr. Hill the 3rd year. I was so nervous from the previous 2 consultations that I decided not to even come for the consult. It came the time this year where I had no choice but to have the surgery due to a minor complication with my jaw (TMJ). My MIL had a recent surgery and said Dr. Hill and staff made the process smooth and comfortable. Also, my dentist said for my situation I would need to see Hill and staff because he is so meticulous. I couldn’t be more pleased with the entire process, especially after being so nervous and put off by my previous 2 consults. The office is nice, quiet and clean. I was expecting the price to be outrageous since the office is so nice, but it was actually the same price if not cheaper than the others! Win win win. I will ALWAYS recommend Dr. Hill and team!

This place is excellent. Highly recommend for anybody that is looking for any kind of oral surgery. As an out of state college student, they were able to provide me with a place that I felt comfortable getting my wisdom teeth removed.

Everything was explained very well. Instructions were given both verbally and in writing. Office was well organized and procedure day went smoothly. I appreciated phone call to check in on me after the procedure. My only one suggestion is an issue when staff tried to call me about the appointment timing or to check that I was coming or for follow up, the phone number appeared on my phone not as the office phone number so I didn't answer I did get voice mails so I knew to call back.

This practice was phenomenal! Everyone was nice and accommodating! I had to reschedule twice and their attitude about it was so friendly. I have low blood sugar and they accommodated me by giving me an early morning appointment! I called and left a message to cancel my first appointment and the surgeon actually called me back and was so kind. The day I arrived to have my wisdom teeth pulled, everyone made you feel comfortable. They checked on me during my recovery. They even gave me ice cream and wheeled me to my car. The assistant Mayra went over all my post-opt information thoroughly. Not to mention the office was very clean! I would highly recommend them for your dental needs! Very satisfied patient.
